Senior Manager, Experience Design

Seattle, WA OR Austin, TX OR Chicago, IL (Hybrid) Full time

Senior Manager, Experience Design

At Expedia Group, we’re on a mission to power global travel for everyone, everywhere. Our multi-disciplinary Experience Design (XD) team is central to that mission, driving impactful work that helps millions of people experience and enjoy more of the world each day. We’re passionate about solving complex problems for our customers and creating intuitive, delightful, and cohesive products and services that serve the needs of travelers, agents, and travel partners.

Our Traveler Messaging & Affiliates XD team works closely with our Product and Engineering partners to envision, design, and ship connected experiences for Expedia travelers and affiliate partners. We’re seeking a strategically minded, outcomes-oriented Senior Manager of Experience Design who can lead a talented multidisciplinary design team focused on up-leveling our capabilities in conversational intelligence and multimodal, AI-powered experiences.

What You’ll Do

As a designer, you’re a systems thinker who understands back-end services but can paint a compelling vision for how the technology manifests in our customer-facing experiences. You’ve worked on AI-powered conversational products, but you know chatbots are just one of many avenues for AI to express itself in a modern app. You’ll bring this expertise to work with our Product and Technology partners to help us co-create a future for AI-powered travel experiences.

As a leader, you’re deeply invested in your team, but you also give them the context, agency, and space they need to grow as designers and teammates. You’re a curious and inclusive collaborator and relationship-builder who shares accountability and outcomes with your work partners and coaches your team to do the same. You have high standards for design craft and experience quality, but your vulnerability, clarity, humor, and openness are the traits that inspire people to reach those heights with you.

Product leadership

  • Be an engaged, proactive “running buddy” and thought partner with Product, Engineering, Analytics, and other disciplines.
  • Influence the product roadmap, driving a compelling experience vision and narrative across related programs and workstreams.
  • Share accountability for the quality of our app experiences, both in the work your team delivers and cross-functionally with Product, Engineering, and User Research.
  • Understand Expedia’s business and the metrics your team supports, and drive design outcomes that balance insights from customer research with business intelligence, market data, and product analytics.

Craft leadership

  • Bring a modern perspective and an informed point of view on designing for AI and multimodal, multi-channel experiences.
  • Role model and mentor others in modern approaches to app design, focusing on up-leveling interaction design, conversational design, and service design techniques and output.
  • Set and uphold high standards for design documentation and delivery. Understand and coach your team in best practices for using and contributing to Expedia Group’s Design System and reference UI.
  • Be a “player/coach” when needed, but let your team own their work. When you jump into Figma or facilitate a design activity, it’s to support your team, not to build your portfolio.

People leadership

  • Model Expedia Group’s leadership commitments, carrying yourself in ways that reflect our shared principles of inclusion, growth, and ownership.
  • Be accountable for your team’s resourcing and capacity planning, ensuring designers can prioritize “deep work” and shift focus with sufficient context and direction as opportunities arise.
  • Recognize, celebrate, and invest in your team’s capabilities and aspirations, helping to craft meaningful goals and development plans that enable people to achieve their potential.

Who You Are

  • You have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in Human-Computer Interaction, User Experience Design, or a related field.
  • Years and degrees matter less than demonstrated experience and the outcomes you’ve achieved.
  • You have a portfolio of work demonstrating your approach to Experience Design and team leadership. In addition to craft and design thinking, we’ll want to see at least two case studies showing how you’ve led a design team toward measurable outcomes.
  • You have experience formally managing design teams, preferably in a complex or matrixed Product organization. Team size is less important to us than how you lead.
  • You have experience in or a working understanding of design capacity planning and resourcing, preferably in an agile technology organization.
  • You have applied experience in or demonstrate a lead-level understanding of modern best practices in interaction, conversational, service, and visual design.
  • You understand modern user experience design, user research, and content design processes and practices to a level that enables strong cross-functional collaboration and an inclusive, engaged culture of multi-disciplinary critique.

Compensation: $157,500-$277,000
